The country of Ecuador

Ecuador is located on the equator and has a diverse climate – from lush jungle to snow-capped mountains. Much of the population is located in remote areas, widely dispersed and not easily reached due to insufficient transportation and infrastructure.

Plan Ecuador's involvement

Nearly 70 per cent of Ecuadorians live in poverty. In 2002, many families were hit particularly hard by unemployment, the "dollarisation" of the Ecuadorian currency, disputes over land rights and other economic problems. There was a noticeable upturn in crime and violence in some areas as a result. In this difficult context, Plan continued to work with some of the poorest families in Ecuador, making a difference in the lives of 5,000 children within their communities. [Read More]
