RoadMovie

Principle

The RoadMovie is an on going effort during the World Tour to automatically capture images of the road and landscapes ahead of the motorcycle at the frequency of 1 picture every minute, 30 or 15 seconds, or in full video (depending on the interest of the surroundings) from an on-board digital camera.

To watch actual RoadMovies (with QuickTime

go to the Travelogue section and select

the regions and roads you would like to traverse.

Regularly assembled on the spot into accelerated movies posted onto this website and individually viewable on streaming mode, the RoadMovie constitutes a unique testimony showing in a very utter way the variety and beauty of our planet. From the long stretches across the Siberian steppes to the coastal tracks of Northwestern Africa and the winding mountain roads of the Andes, the RoadMovie allows everyone to participate in the journey, almost Live!, from the comfort of home.

After the World Tour is complete, it is planned to present the RoadMovie in different venues as part of several environmental, educational or artistic exhibitions.

Technology

The RoadMovie is captured from a digital camera fixed to the front of the motorcycle within an aerodynamic protective all-weather housing attached to the left outside frame of the motorcycle (see picture below). The camera has the capability to work in "time lapse" mode, i.e. to be programmed to take automatically a picture at a set frequency (every 15 seconds for example) for several hours in a row.

Tests have been performed by Geodysseo over the last months and a camera has already been selected for its reliability, picture quality, sturdiness, and battery autonomy.

On a daily basis, or as often as possible, the recorded pictures are assembled into compressed digital movies on a multimedia laptop computer brought along, and uploaded whenever possible from Internet accesses on the way for publishing in a streaming mode on this website. Additional information such as image locations and dates are also included with the movies.

The camera housing has the capability to slightly rotate to the left or to the right, so that the rider can easily, while riding, orient it towards the most interesting sceneries ahead. Depending on the scenic interest of the areas traveled the camera's shooting frequency may also be temporarily adjusted: one picture every minute or two for long road stretches, and one picture every 30 or 15 seconds for areas with a higher density of interesting sights to be captured.

From time to time some full videos can be recorded as well to capture the most interesting sceneries or events.
